Cumberland County Transition House Assoc. is a non-for profit shelter and counselling service for women and their families who are dealing with family violence in Cumberland County. We offer individual and group counselling with women and their children regarding domestic violence and its effects. Also we provide group counselling with men who have abusive behaviors. We have a 9 bed shelter with several emergency beds. We have had as many as 17 people in the shelter at one time. The shelter has been open since 1990. We provide outreach services to people all over Cumberland County as many of our clients live in isolated areas and can not afford transportation.

The Cumberland Early Intervention Program is a registered charity administered by a volunteer board of directors since 1990. Early Intervention believes in building on child and family strengths. Through partnerships with families we facilitate the acquisition of skills and knowledge which can help to promote family and child well-being. Our desire is not to do for the families but to provide them with support and resources which enable them to problem solve for themselves. We strive to provide families with current information on their child's diagnosis or delay, information on child development, access to local programs and supports, information on more widespread resources, assistance in contacting communicating with pertinent professionals, assistance in transitions to new programs or school, and access to developmentally appropriate equipment, toys, games, books, and activities.

Campers forge friendships, participate in programs that enhance their personal development, enjoy some independence from home, and their parents or caregivers appreciate the professional care provided to a loved one with a disability. We also provide affordable wheelchairs and other mobility equipment to Nova Scotians, and provide business and skills training through out kitchens and catering programs in our New Leaf Enterprises location in Halifax. Our sport and active living programs allows children, youth and adults to experience the benefits of play and recreation. Nova Scotians with disabilities seek equality and inclusion, and access to independence and opportunities that come with full citizenship. Maggie's Place Family Resource Centre is a non=-profit, charitable. community based organization serving Cumberland and Colchester counties. The main centre serving Cumberland County is located at 11 Elmwood Drive in Amherst. As a non-profit, charitable organization, Maggie's Place is run by a volunteer board of directors made up of community partners, parents, caregivers and interested community members. Maggie's Place was established on 1994 through core funding from the federal government's "Community Action Program for Children" and has since grown to receive additional core funding from the "Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program" and the province of Nova Scotia.Other grant funding is received through the SOAR, SPAR and Pugwash & Area Health Boards "wellness Grants", the Municipality of Cumberland and the United Was of Cumberland County. Another important source of funding and support for Maggie's Place is through the tremendous generosity of businesses, groups and individual members of our community. Maggie's Place provides an array of programs and services that strengthen and enhance the health and social development of children and their families. Our aim is to support families through the prenatal, infant, childhood and youth periods, with an emphasis on the 0-6 year early childhood period. While the majority of programming takes place at the centre in Amherst, come programs and services are offered throughout Cumberland County at outreach location in Northport, Pugwash, Wallace, Wentworth, Oxford, Springhill, River Hebert, Parrsboro and Advocate. Maggie's Place Family Resource Centre programs and services are completely free of charge to participants and a;; families are welcome at Maggie's Place. programs that promote early literacy and social development opportunities for preschool age children such as POP-UP, Once Upon a Time,and Friday Funtimes, are core to our work. Special Olympics Amherst is a Not for Profit organization, made up of a small group of volunteers who provide sport opportunities for people with an intellectual disability. We provide our athletes with the opportunity to participate in sports, to develop personal growth and to socialize. Our programs run from mid October until July. In the winter we offer basketball, floor hockey, bowling and curling. In the summer program we offer track & field, soccer and bocce. Practices are Sunday afternoons from 1:00-2:45pm. The winter program is held at E.B. Chandler Jr. high School. The summer program take place at the Amherst Regional high School field. Every effort is made to ensure that our local athletes have the opportunity to compete at the winter and summer games each year, held in various locations through out Nova Scotia.
